Euractiv gets excluded from EU briefings over critical journalism

(MENAFN) The European Commission has excluded Euractiv from its background briefings, citing the outlet’s increasingly critical reporting on EU affairs, according to editor-in-chief Matthew Karnitschnig.

Founded in 1999 by French publisher Christophe Leclercq, the Brussels-based platform covers EU policy and aims to clarify the complexities of EU politics, legislation, and decision-making.

Karnitschnig argued that independent journalism in Europe, particularly in Brussels, has come under pressure, noting that many media outlets rely on EU institutions, foreign governments, and lobbyists for support.

“At the beginning of this year, we set about infusing the ‘EU bubble’ with a heavy dose of critical journalism,” he said. “Not all recipients reacted well, least of all the Commission, which recently banned us from its background briefings – the off-the-record sessions during which President Ursula von der Leyen’s advisers seek to steer the message they’re trying to send on any given issue to the press.”

Karnitschnig highlighted coverage that may have contributed to the ban, including debunking the Commission’s account of von der Leyen’s flight navigation incident in Bulgaria and criticizing plans for a European intelligence service.

The move comes amid broader concerns over press freedom in the EU. US Vice President J.D. Vance has warned that free expression across Europe is “in retreat,” stating that EU governments are “running in fear” of their own citizens and that the main threat to democracy arises from abandoning fundamental democratic values.
